Make Mony Targgetting Commonlly Misspealed Keeywords
Or How About: Make Money Targeting Commonly Misspelled Keywords
You may be surprised by the number of common misspellings of keywords that are searched for on a daily basis (Google estimates 10% of all searches are miss typed or misspelled.) Here’s a list of some common misspellings, and the number of searches for them using the “exact” term in Googles keyword tool, and their listed CPC value:
- Mony-27,100-$1.88
- Acnee-6,600-$1.04
- Jewlery-90,500-$1.36
- Flowrs-2900-$3.99
- Acessories-9400-$1.03
- Accomodation-90,000-$1.87
As you can see common misspellings can get a good amount of search volume, as well as have some value, and therefore be worthwhile to go after.
There are many ways you can target these words, lets take a look at a few:
Target Them with Your PPC Campaign
This is a very good way to target these misspellings. Why? Because you can get clicks for misspellings at a fraction of the cost of the correct spelling (usually, that is
. Just to prove my point lets take a look at the correct spellings for the above keywords:
- Money-$2.51
- Acne-$3.78
- Jewelry-$1.54
- Flowers-$5.11
- Accessories-$1.50
- Accommodation-$1.88
The misspelled keyword is going to nearly always have a cheaper CPC, sometimes the difference won’t be much, but other times the savings could be substantial! I feel that this is the best way to target most misspelled keywords.
Use Keyword Misspellings in the Image Alt Tags, Link Title Tags and Meta Tags
By using the misspelled keywords there your visitors are far less likely to see them, and you’re far less likely to look like you don’t know how to spell yourself!
Include a Paragraph at the End of Your Page Listing Common Misspellings
The paragraph could be called “Recent Keyword Searches” or “Some People Reached This Site Searching For:” or something like that.
Put Up a Quick Blogger Blog Targeting The Misspelling
I would only go this route if the misspelling gets a good amount of searches. I’ve seen this done where the keyword is misspelled site-wide, or only in the title and/or domain name. I guess it would depend on the competition for the misspelling. This site should of course offer-or link to- your offering and main site.
Setup Custom 404 Pages
If you have misspellings that receive enough searches to justify it, setup custom 404 pages just for those searches. For instance if the search query was “make mony online” your 404 page could say: You searched for “make mony online” if you meant to search for “make money online” you’ve come to the right place! Then send them to the appropriate page.
Conclusion
You should definitely research the common misspellings of the keywords you target with your sites! You could be pleasantly surprised by the amount of traffic you could generate just by including some optimization for these words (some get thousands of searches each and every day!)
Again I would not recommend using any misspellings in your content, because it would look unprofessional (spellchecker is my friend!) A post or page telling about the common misspellings of your keywords, perhaps in a humorous way could work.
To find the common misspellings of your particular keywords just Google “free keyword typo tool” and you’ll find a plethora of options to generate a list for you.
With Googles search spell check, optimizing for misspelled keywords may not be as important as it used to be, but there is still traffic that can find it’s way to your site using misspellings, and because you may be able to optimize for them quickly and easily, I feel it’s a step that shouldn’t be overlooked. Remember every little bit helps (your traffic building efforts-that is;-)

It’s a good idea, but not a new one and unfortunately I think Google are getting wise to such things. Plus the fact that they automatically suggest correct spellings won’t help. I wonder how Bing deals with misspellings?
I just checked Bing out James and they give you the choice of their correct spelling, or your misspelling. Maybe targeting misspellings isn’t as important as it once was, but when it comes to seo every little bit can help.
I think this was a money maker about 1.5 years ago but now Google offers correct spellings and most everyone clicks on the “Did you mean” before they start clicking any other links.
In my opinion, there are many better ways to use your valuable time each day to make money online.

Yeah, you probably right Randy, thanks for your opinion.
Agree with above comments…but as pointed out the PPC is lower. So if they type in the misspelling and click on the ad you are paying a lower rate for the same click.
YOu mightn’t get that many clicks that way, but a good way of reducing your overall PPC.
Same thing with respect to organic results. They might click on your result ignoring the suggestion tool in either Bing or Google.
Every little bit helps.
Does the way the person misspell something tell you anything about them? Revealing for eg a native speaker of a particular language, or at least speaks to the probabilities of that.
Misspellings are easy, spellchecker is your friend, but I noticed that you spelt TARGGETTING wrongly. Of no relevance, but just shows how easy it can happen.
Hi Adele,
Yeah, happens to me all the time…me misspelling words that is;o) I’m glad you can’t wear out spell checker by overuse lol Sometimes I don’t see a word that spell checker has underlined or occasionally I forget to even use it!
Thanks for your comment
Earlier this was a major issue for the people who used to search for their query and get diverted to some ill-fed sites… but Google has made a major correction to correct this and this is really good.

What about targetting alternative spellings, like English or continental spellings – example check/cheque? These are acceptable to Google when used sparingly.

Very good point Rhys. I can see where this could be helpful. Thanks again for your thoughtful comment!
This is an interesting approach. Capitalizing on misspelled words. But the question is : Does it really work ?
Truthfully, not that well any more Melanie, unless you are targeting a keyword that is commonly misspelled and could result in good traffic increase.
Use them in organic seo too.
Sure Christine, every little bit helps the bottom line.
It’s a really interesting topic, even if it’s not the most profitable one anymore. I understand how a word like “jewellery” could be commonly misspelled (especially with confusion between British and American spelling) and “accomodation” is one that I often get wrong, but one of the ones on the list that seems weird to me is “acnee”.
Like I said before, it’s great that Google picks up on misspellings now, but I do wish there was still a way to make money from this!

There still will be some people who don’t accept the search engines correct spelling, and for those people if your site is there for the misspelling you could realize some traffic. especially if it’s a misspelling that is common on a high traffic keyword, like the one you mentioned “accomodation” instead of “accommodation”.
Thanks for stopping by Ravi.
Misspelled keywords are great I heard that one misspelled domain called mortage.com was sold for over $200k for the misspelled traffic

Thanks for that piece of info Eugene. As I said in the article, if a misspelling can bring any significant traffic it can be worthwhile to pursue it.
