Lets start with the basics shall we? Hubpages.com is my favorite web 2.0 site to publish content to. It’s a site that will allow you to publish your good original content (articles are called “hubs”.) You’ll find a very easy to use site, and a community of fellow hubbers that are a lot of fun and very helpful. You can write about just about anything your heart desires, but they do however have a few rules on what is allowed:
You can publish hubs that are only 300 words long or opt for writing longer hubs (many of which are like one page websites, 1000’s of words long.) You’re asked to choose when you publish a hub whether it’s intent is to earn you extra cash (called a commercial hub) or just to inform. Your hub can be about anything, and I mean anything, check this hub by one of my favorite authors. Hubpages is one of the best sources of online article marketing!
Hubpages is a web 2.0 site that (at the time of this writing) sports a page rank of 6. Not to shabby! This means when you publish hubs on Hubpages.com as a part of your online article marketing strategy your content gets a really good boost up the serps (search engine results pages.) and a higher ranking =more money for you!
Hubpages is not only very easy to use (more on this in a minute) but you can get involved in the very vivifying community as well (their a fun bunch!) And they can be very helpful in all aspects of writing (there are some very good writers there) as well as good advice on choosing the right keywords, and how to earn more money from your hubs, how to promote your articles, etc.
So How Do I Make Money On Hubpages?
You can earn extra cash with a hubpage with Google AdSense, eBay, Amazon, Kontera, or with affiliate offers. I’ve found AdSense to be the best money-maker for me. Just sign-up for an AdSense account, add your affiliate code to your Hubpage affiliate settings and you’re good to go! Hubpages can also can supply some pretty high quality backlinks to your website or blog and should become an intergral part of your online article marketing strategy. If you’re in this for the money, you’ll want to do proper keyword research before you write your hub, as always, to try to assure a high standing in the serps. You should give your hubs a few backlinks (from other articles and hubs) as well.
How To Get Started With Hubpages
- Go to Hubpages.com and sign-up.
- Follow directions and create you first hub (email me via my contact page if you just can’t figure it out ;o)
- Sign-up for your AdSense account (if you don’t have one) and enter your details by going to “my account” and then “affiliate settings”.
- That’s it! You’ll begin to make money when someone clicks your AdSense ads (don’t click them yourself or try anything sneaky cause Google will find out and ban you!)
More Tips To Help You Make Money With Your Hubs
- Do proper keyword research. What’s proper keyword research? Well I like to go after keyword phrases that I can rank for without any or very little offsite seo (backlinks.) If you wanted to write a hub about “payday loans” for instance I would suggest going to Google’s Keyword Tool and enter that keyword phrase (which is just too competitive itself), and you’ll see a bunch of related keywords and keyword phrases. I would then pick a keyword phrase that has at least 500 searches or more a month, and costs advertisers at least $1.00 a click. The real deciding factor though is how much competition you’ll have to overcome for a high ranking in the serps. You would ideally want less than 10,000 competing webpages with no page with a page rank higher than a 2 or so. Some hubs will be winners and some won’t…that’s just the nature of the beast. To make any real money it becomes a numbers game, more is better! I’ve heard of Hubbers making $10.00 a day from one hub, but that would be unusual. I would imagine the average income from a good hub would be in the neighborhood of a buck or two a day.
- Get Backlinks To Your Hubs. You can build backlinks to your hubs to give them more authority and a higher ranking in the serps. You should link your related hubs together (with internal links) anyway, but give your hubs links from other sources (article directories, commenting, forums, etc.) and watch your hubs move right up the serps.
- Make Your Hubs Visually Appealing. Add images, video, maybe some of the widgets available. You want to engage your readers and keep them wanting more! I would shoot for 600-1000 words if you are covering a topic well, and at least 400 words as a minimum.
- Get Involved In The Hubpages Community. By getting involved in the forums and reading and commenting on other hubbers work, etc. you will raise your authors score (you’ll be given a “score” at Hubpages) and if nothing else feel good about your writing abilities. lol I don’t know if this would help you make more money from AdSense though as you will find fellow hubbers are not going to be the ones that click on your adSense ads, it’ll be the people who found your hub by searching for your keywords on a search engine.
- Hubpages Referral Program. You can make extra money from anybody who you refer to hubpages that write successful money making hubs. I think the cut is 10% which comes out of Hubpages cut not the person you referred. I’ve referred 30 new hubbers myself (at the time of this writing), and although I haven’t made much money from those referrals yet, I’ll bet I will in time.
Conclusion
If you’re just starting out online and want to make some cash, or if you have other pages you want backlinks to, Hubpages is a great place to start! The site is well put together, and very user friendly. There are a lot of good Hubbers to help you out if you have any difficulties or are technologically challenged. Hubpages is, as I said before, my favorite web 2.0 site out there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes your favorite as well! So sign-up for Hubpages and become a hubber-you’ll be glad you did!

The only thing is that I would prefer to OWN the platform that my content is on rather than sharing a revenue split with hub pages. Then again, perhaps people make more money from these sites than if they were to try and create their own?

My favorite is hub pages too – in addition to the links you can be making good money from your hubpages themselves. One point people need to remember is that you need to make quality hubs in order to get the backlink juice. This is because unless your hubscore is 75 and above, hubpages will make your links nofollow instead of dofollow.

Great tips on starting out with HubPages. I have written hubs on and off for about a year, and they have been doing pretty well as a source of passive income. Since I’m getting into hub writing again, I have also researched ways of promoting them better. You can get traffic to your hubs or articles like you would any of your writings online, by building links to them. As far as how much you can expect to earn from your content…well…I guess that would be from nothing to just about unlimited. Altho a few dollars a month per hub would about right.
