Need Cash-Start a Niche Marketing Business

Are you just starting out online, looking for a plan to make some money? Don’t know what to do, how or where to start? Why not start a niche marketing business? Follow along as I set up a niche blog, and show you step by step what I do as I do it. Together we’ll get a blog up and running, get visitors, and hopefully cash in and make some extra cash to line our pockets with ;o).

I know what you’re thinking, ok Jerry how much will it cost me, well don’t worry, it won’t cost you a penny, that’s right, nada, zip, zilch,  everything you’ll need is free and readily available online! I’ll also be available through my contact page if you get stuck and need extra help, again no charge. Why am I doing this? Simply put, I like helping people out, to share my knowledge with someone who needs it.

I’ll be getting started soon and I expect to take a couple of weeks to get it all set up. So check back and lets git-er-done! These will be the steps we’ll be covering:

  • Finding a niche (hopefully a profitable one)
  • Setting up a niche blog at Blogspot.com
  • Monetizing your blog
  • Take the necessary steps to move up the serp’s (search engine results page)  and get some traffic to your blog
  • And remember it won’t cost you a thing-all FREE

So are you ready to have your own online business? It may only be one little niche blog, but it’s a start, and it’ll get you in the game.  So lets get started, first:

How much money do you need?

How much money do you want to make from your niche blog? $5.00 a day- $100.00 a day? The amount of income you want to make will help you determine how competitive a niche to go after.

The more competitive niches will take more time and effort get that coveted number one spot on Google.

Lets get an idea of what a visitor is worth, shall we? Ok, you choose a niche and work your tail off to climb to number one of the serp’s. You get 1000 people a day from Google and it’s said that 40% of those people will click on the number one website. So 400 people visit your website daily from Google. You have your AdSense optimized well and get a 5% CTR (Click Through Rate), and you make 50 cents a click, .05 x 400 x .50 = $10.00 per day income from AdSense. About $300.00 per month.

The smaller the niche-the less money made per blog-the more niche blogs you need to realize a substantial income.

Writing content has been my bug-a-boo (bug-a-boo means it’s a pain in my arse), so I’m shooting for more than a 1000 people a day searching for my search terms. Notice I said search terms, not term, that means all my terms together need to get those people to my blog.

If you’re not prepared to spend some time (months) working your way up the serp’s then you need to pick a less competitive niche to start with. Did that make sense? The smaller the niche, the easier it will be to rank for your keywords, and the smaller the niche the less money can be made, generally. The larger the niche, the harder it will be to rank for your keywords, but the reward (money) should be greater.

Finding Your Niche

First go to the Google Keyword Tool and lets find the topic of our niche. When choosing a niche you want to pick a topic you know a little something about (recommended), that way it’s much easier to create content for your new blog, as it’s best to have several pages of good keyword optimized content (I would suggest at least 5 pages.)

Say you really enjoy cooking-no you have a real passion for cooking, that’s good, cooking will be our starting keyword. Go to Google’s free keyword tool and type in cooking, choose the “exact” match type, and “show” all the columns, to get the most and best info on your keywords.

cooking

The keyword “cooking” has has over 7,000,000 searches on average per month. Sounds good, but  not so fast, lets type “cooking” with the parentheses into Google. There’s 168,000,000 competing web pages, meaning it would take years to get on the first page (if it’s even possible).

Quick tip: I enter $50.00 where it asks for your maximum CPC (cost per click) which gives you the maximum amount paid by advertisers for clicks. This gives you an idea if there’s money to be made with that particular keyword.

Looking down the results page, I see these interesting keywords:

Keyword                             Searches            Competing web pages

  • Cooking recipes                 301,000               3,700,000
  • Cooking pasta                     14,800                  119,000
  • Low fat cooking                  9,900                    190,000
  • Healthy cooking                 49,500                 1,430,000

Here’s a list of interesting keywords generated by these searches:

Keyword                               Searches          Competing web pages

  • Cooking light recipes         110,000               37,500
  • Cooking pasta                        14,800                 119,000
  • Low fat cooking                    9,900                   190,000
  • Healthy cooking recipes   4,400                   37,000

“Cooking light recipes” jumps out at you, ya think? With over 110,000 searches and only 37,500 competing web pages, we could have a winner! Lets investigate those keywords a little more, and see what we find.

Check out the competition

Go to good ole Google and type in “cooking light recipes” to bring up your competition. Size up the competition by finding their pagerank (I useGoogle’s toolbar with the page rank indicator), and the number of backlinks pointing to the site. Here’s a few sites to find those backlinks:

  1. Backlink checker
  2. Another free backlink checker
  3. One more
  4. Yahoo Type in “linkdomain:theurlhere”

Google, of course likes the sites with the higher pagerank, and “he who has the most backlinks wins”.

Pagerank is on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the strongest. All the sites on page one for our keywords “cooking light recipes”  have a pagerank of “0″, so that’s good!

The first site that comes up on a search for our keywords has 352,159 backlinks, now that’s not so good! Even though the links to this site are PRO links you would need to get more of them to move above them on the page.

Basically to rank higher then any other website for your keywords you need to see how many links they have pointing to all the pages of the site, and determine the pagerank of those incoming links, and then simply get more links to your site. Sometimes it’s easier said than done.

Just remember when choosing a niche for your niche marketing business, especially when you are just starting out, less competitive keywords are much easier to rank for. Get to the number one spot for a few of these to gain some experience, then go for the more competitive keywords and really cash in!

Well this post is getting pretty long so I’ll end here, if you have questions just ask in a comment and I’ll try to help out.

If you’re just starting out just just go for a few small less competitive keywords to start with and don’t even worry about the money just have some fun with it, dominate the niche and gain some experience.

Happy niche hunting and good luck.

Cool tool, Wow if you’re just getting started online, having the ability to create useful tools like this can really give you a leg up. I think I’ll do a post and link to it sometime (I’m just really busy right at the moment.)

  • khaled from van leasing

Not sure if you use wordtracker or any of the other paid tools for checking keywords, but there is a big discrepancy between the results and those provided by Google, which seem to be rounded off. Anyway wordtracker allows you to do the analysis for Yahoo and MSN also and although a keyword may be competitive on Google you sometimes find little opportunities with Yahoo which are still worth exploring.
    Great article cheers.

  • admin

Yeah, I do just use Google’s tool, which I know is not exact, so I just keep that in mind. Also you’ll find if you change the match type to “exact” you get a smaller and more realalistic result.
    Thanks for your input, Khaled

Really it is so cheap to be self-hosted if you are serious about this just go ahead and strike out on your own and avoid the free platform hosting. In the long run it will save you alot since you will not have to transfer later.

  • I agree with tracy, transferring later is a big hassle and there is no reason when there are pretty cheap ways to get your own domain these days. and as long as you put some effort in you should be able to recoup those losses fairly quickly.

  • admin

Yeah, they get easier with experience-no doubt.

  • admin

No doubt about it. I mean what other business can you run for under $100 bucks a year? And have the possibility of really raking it in.

  • I really think you have a great blog here. That is great to share your knowledge with us. Too many times, people have it in them to help, and choose not to. I hope you help a lot of people.

  • I will take your rss feed, it’s surely great sites for noob like me,thx

  • It is a clear explanation why even the smallest niche blogs like mine can make some money with Google traffic.

  • That is a great idea. I think I have heard many people mention something like this before, but your explanation actually made sense to me.

  • Nice article. Perhaps you failed to mentioned, once you find your niche is to look for blogs(correct me if I’m wrong) to market your website. There are a lot of web based free tools out there can you can use for searching. Good luck.

  • admin

    Hi Martin,
I’m not sure I know what you mean “look for blogs(correct me if I’m wrong) to market your website.” But yes you need to market your website (generate traffic) or all your work of finding the perfect niche, building a great website, ect. is for not! In some niches you really don’t need a lot of traffic to make money, if all of the traffic is ready to buy your offering. You will need to spend most of your time generating traffic to your site, if you expect to have any kind of “quick” success (quick could still take several months;o).)
Anyway thanks for stopping by Martin

Jerry, i’m really learning a lot from you. I mean, a LOT! You are giving me practical ideas. I must admit, i am too naive on this business but wanted to start one for myself.

  • I’m glad Nicole, that’s why I’m here with Cashblog just to help people like you out (it’s not to make money, as I don’t want to try to sell you every “make money quick online” ebook that comes along!)
