Blogging has opened up a new world for those who lack the time to learn HTML, CSS, and other web languages. Though it has become easier to begin an online presence through different resources in Web 2.0 making money is still very difficult and takes plenty of patience and time. The most difficult part of running a blog created to generate cash is the time in which it takes to learn SEO and other aspects of online marketing. The best resource out there for people new to the online business world is to spend plenty of time reading articles at ezinearticles.com and participating in the webmaster forum v7n.com/forums.

Once you gain a fundamental understanding of online marketing it is a good idea to begin researching your competition. Personally I am in the make money niche and spend a hour or so daily going over not only my competitions backlinks, but also looking through their website making sure to stay up on any new programs that are being offered to help people make money. You can apply this to any niche. For example if you run a website or blog about politics then you will want to constantly be visiting high authority news sources such as cnn.com and others to keep up with any new updates in the political world. Also to compete within your niche you will want to keep up with the number, relevancy, and number of backlinks that your competitors have. When researching the backlinks of competitors I usually use Yahoo’s site explorer which you can utilize by going to yahoo.com and in the search type link:http://www.yourcompetitor.com and it will show you the top thousand of your competitors link partners.

You should take a few months building your backlink foundation realizing that your competitors in most cases have been around quite a while so catching up will take time. Do not give up your job for your online endeavors until you have a blog that is already generating enough income to satisfy your monetary needs which usually takes at the minimum six months and only if you spend at least a few hours each day promoting and posting new content. The only reason new bloggers fail is they pick a niche in which they see monetary value yet have no real interest in so after a couple months they let the blog die. When choosing the niche (category of web presence) in which you wish to build a blog make sure it is something you feel that in a year or two you will still be able to write about. I have heard different theories on how to create a successful blog and one idea that I have seen come up over and over again is rather than create a blog which you are passionate about you should create one that consists of popular subject matter. There is a couple of reasons this is flawed first what is popular right now will not be popular in a couple months or years. The second reason this usually fails is the blogger who created the blog only because it was popular really does not know much about the topic and only hoped to bring traffic in because of the popularity. One problem these people run into is the ability of their visitors to tell that their knowledge of the subject is very limited and usually lose credibility within the blogosphere.

So once you have created a blog within a niche that you feel very passionate about and have begun catching up to your competitors which results in targeted traffic from search engines it is time to monetize (begin creating an income from your blogs visitors). Usually the most used effort that I have seen bloggers use to make money is Google’s adsense. Usually when bloggers ask on the forum how to earn extra money online, adsense will come up, something though that I feel should be mentioned is when trying to make money with a blog adsense is not your only option. If you run a blog that is mainly informational then perhaps setting up an affiliate account with amazon.com and offering books which will compliment the information on your blog would offer a higher return compared with a PPC program. Another possible option if you feel that selling books or video would not work well on your blog is clickbank.com. Click Bank is a website that allows you to set up a free account then sale stuff that compliments the topic of your blog. For example if you are running a blog on the appropriate way to fly fish then offering a fishing pole and a book about the correct way to tie flies would probably make quite a bit more than receiving the few cents that adsense offers. Now on the other hand if you are running a personal blog which really has no items to compliment it adsense would be the perfect way to monetize.

Too have a long lasting successful blog do not ever sale out. Once you have earned a high position in the SERP’s there will be many offers for advertisements. Only take the offers if you feel they add to your blog and will help your visitors/readers. If you begin spamming the backlinks which you get from other webmasters for having a unique helpful blog will disappear meaning you will drop in the SERPs. Also if your readers notice that rather than unique helpful content you are turning into one big advertisement they will drop their readership. So if you would like to succeed within the blogosphere never and I mean never give anything priority on your readability and your visitors/readers!

It’s definitely very possible to earn some extra money running a blog. And one of the ways to keep your visitors coming back and making comments is replying to the comments & participating in the discussion. I think you are very good about that. Many other bloggers neglect that aspect.

  • Yeah Frank, one of my favorite things to do is answer my comments! I guess if I spent more time working on making extra money online instead of answering my comments I might be more successful in that regard, but oh well, I make enough to satisfy me and I like interacting with you guys!

  • Jerry from Flash Class

i think a lot of people could use some extra money with a part time effort.

  • Yeah, I would imagine just about everybody Jerry.

  • really good advice on how to be a successful blogger. When you are first starting out and trying to make money online fast you realise that it is not as easy as you initially thought but if you take good advice like yours and keep with it then you will be ok.

  • It does take perserverance no doubt about it (for most people anyway;0) Thanks for your comment Trevor.

Thanks for sharing this article. I wholeheartedly agree about the assessment on why many blogs fail because of the loss of interest in the niche category and the failure to see a monetary return, which ass the article states, takes patience. A helpful hint: as a former magazine editor, I find that creating an editorial calendar will help you organize content and give you some goals on deliverables. An editorial policy will also help with fine-tuning your craft as well. You may earn a reputation for not only a solid and unique perspective but also for writing it well.

  • Your welcome Rick,
    Thanks for your input.

  • What really matter to be successful with blogging is creating 1000 of interesting contents that indexed by search engine. Also don’t forget to gain subscriber. Make sure people get benefit while reading the blog.

I’ve in eager have started a free blog considering that would be the main resource. I am still confused how will I take up my articles, how will I shape them up. Getting indexed in Google is through backlinks but bringing traffic is going to give me some hard time. No one gives money for free! You’ve to earn it :) Online Business is no less than real job.

  • Yes Mark, online business is a “real” job! There is so much competition, and then just the writing involved does amount to some work, but once you get some good high quality real estate (content) built you can then spend most of your time building that “oh so important” traffic. Traffic is what makes you money, it’s really that simple!

  • Good information. I guess patience, persistence and perserverance are all key in achieving some level of success. I’m not expecting a six figure income. But some extra change would be nice doing something I love to do. Thanks again

  • Hi Roschelle, yeah it takes stick-to-isum no doubt about it!

  • It’s true that writing about stuff you enjoy is by far the best policy. If it’s a topic that has been dear to your heart for ages it’s amazing just how much you know about it. You can keep cranking out lots of stuff just off the top of your head for a very long time. You’ll also keep learning new stuff, and you can share that with readers as well.

Being in it for the long haul is very, very important. Just the time that a blog’s been around is a significant SEO factor. So if you just keep at it and post regularly (even if it’s only occasionally) then sure enough you’ll eventually start to pull in ever increasing levels of targeted traffic.

  • Hi Matt, very good advice from someone else who is in it “for the long haul” thanks for your comment!

  • I agree that having good content is a must. Do you feel that auto content from tools like WordPress Direct is good enough content to have added to someone’s blog. It seems that it is useful since its categorized but some of the stuff being posted can be junk?

  • I wasn’t familiar with Wordpress Direct Derek, so I had to take a look. I think I would use your Wordpress Direct blogs for linking purposes, rather then your money sites. In other words give your sites you expect to make your money with links (blogroll, or add links to the content) from the Wordpress Direct sites. I would experiment though, and see how they do (you should always be experimenting to see what works.)

Some are really earning enough through blogging and I think having a high traffic blog and useful topics are very important.

  • Yeah Janneth those build-it-and-they-will-come days are over! You really do have to pick a good topic (from a money making standpoint) and work at building your traffic.

  • Nicole from Background Check

Very well explained. I’ve been reading lots of topics/articles about making money online through blogging and it is not as easy as i expect it to be. I still have lots of things to learn about like backlinks, SEO’s and much more. Your article had answered some of my queries.

    Thanks to you!

  • Thanks for the compliment Nicole.

  • Engel from background check

blog has been very helpful to my business. I have been able to link with so many people. I have new customers for my product, and I have been able to talk with the decision makers for companies just from using blog.

  • This is a great overview of using blogs for your niche. For newbies, taking each paragraph of this post and really learning what the author is saying will do wonders for your online success. Too often, blogs are used incorrectly and the user gets discouraged and walks away. Great information here folks, read and re-read it. Understand it, implement it!
