Article Marketing-Tips On Writing Your Best Articles

Article marketing is a source of quality backlinks you really should devote some serious time to. Why? Because you are in complete control of the quality, the  amount of content, and of course the all important anchor text used to link back to your site! Not only that, but write a good solid 500 to a 800 word article giving needed information, and more than likely then not it will be picked up by people looking for content for their ezines, blog, newsletters, etc. and your number of  links well grow, grow, and grow some more! The only real downside is you have no control over who links to you, but a link is a link right? (much better than a link in a comments section or a forum etc.)

Another advantage of article marketing is that the people who click through to your site are targeted and “already like you!” They have read your article and want to read more of what you have to say.

I’ve been writing articles for EzineArticles.com, I choose them because they are the biggest have a PR of 6 and seem to show up on page one of the serps with regularity. I’ve written about 20 or so with many more to follow.

So how does article marketing work? Well, you simply write articles of 500 to say 800 words (you can get by with as little as 250 words- but I wouldn’t) then you submit them to any of the 100’s if not 1000’s of article directories out there. The more you submit to the more people will see your article, and the more it will be picked up by people needing content. It’s important to include a link or two back to your site, usually in the resource box at the end of your article (using, of course, your chosen anchor text!)

Articles of course can be used to drive traffic to your website, a squeeze page, anywhere you want to give them more info on the subject of your article, sell them something, etc.

Tips to Help You Write Your Best Articles:

1.What should your article be about? Just give good needed information about the subject of your website or niche. Say your website is about fishing for small mouth bass, you could write articles covering:

  • Best lures for catching small mouth bass
  • Best time of year for catching small mouth bass
  • 10 tips for catching small mouth bass in warm water conditions
  • How to fish structure to catch small mouth bass

You get the idea. There are a ton of things to write about in just about every niche. Answer people’s questions that they may ask about your niche, become an “expert” on the subject of your niche! Be informative, give them just what they are looking for and they will click through to your site to learn more.

2.Spend some time on the title of your article. This is very important! You need to grab your readers attention  (remember attention spans are short online)  as well as include keywords that get searched for. Here are a few suggestions for possible titles:

  • Top 10 (or insert number) places to catch small mouth bass
  • How to …do what you do
  • What do you (need, want,  love, hate, etc) the (most, least, best, etc)
  • Why would you…do what you do
  • What is the (best,  worst, fastest, etc) way to …do what you do

Practice writing titles (write many for your article and choose the best one.) Look at titles of some of the articles that show up on page one of the serps for keywords in your niche. When you come up with a title you feel is the best type it into Google in quotes, ideally you want no results. Why? Because then it will be much easier to see if your article is picked-up (for content)  and by whom later on.

3.Organize your information so it flows well and is an easy read. Normally you would have an introductory paragraph, then make your main points, and a closing paragraph. Concentrate on the benefits of what you are writing about for your readers. Always keep your readers in mind when writing your article. Write as though you are talking to a good friend, keep it simple and informative. Writing articles is not rocket science, you want to inform, and you want to entice a click-through to your site.

4.Fill in your resource box. This is also very important as this is how your readers will click-through to your site! You may say a little about yourself (why you’re an expert small mouth bass fisherman) and tell your readers to find out even more tips on fishing for bass to visit your site. Look at some other article’s resource boxes and go with what looks and sounds the best.

5.Submit your article to multiple article directories. How many? There’s a lot of disagreement on that subject online (with duplicate content penalties and all.) I think if you submit the same article to 5-10 directories you would be fine, but that’s just my opinion. Another consideration is the age of your site, generally the older the site the faster links can be added, as a very young site would not look natural if hunderds of links suddenly showed up! There are writers that submit an article to 100’s of directories and some that only submit an article to one. As with most things SEO Google (the search engine we all want to impress) is not talking! So we’re left to either do as others do or experiment and do what works for us. If you decide to opt with mutible directory submissions here is a nifty piece of free software put out by Brad Callen that I really like, it’s called fittingly Article Submitter (click on “Directory Submitter” at the top of the page for the free version.) It’s much, much faster than manually submitting them, it’s very functional and it looks cool!;0) Highly recommended!

I’m going to try a little experiment myself. I have two websites in the same niche that are closely related, I’m going to write articles for both. Articles written for one I’ll submit to about 60 to 80 directories, and articles for the other I’ll limit to just the 5 with the highest PR. I’ll see which seems to benefit the most, and write a post and let you know. So sign-up for email updates here and keep in touch.

UPDATE

Well after three months my little experiment is over. So what happened with my two sites?  Well pretty much what I thought would happen, the blog I gave 60-80 links is getting about 20 uniques a day, while the blog I gave only 5 links gets very few search visitors (about 1-3 a day.)  So I’ll now up the incoming link count to the second blog (as well as the first) and give it a few months (these things don’t happen overnite!) and put another update here.

Conclusion

Article marketing needs to be ongoing, like a lot of traffic building techniques you will see it’s benefits over time. After writing some articles and seeing some results already I think it will become one of my favorite ways to build traffic and readership. And remember article marketing is FREE (I love the free stuff!)

Give article marketing a try, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Oh and I included the 10 best article directories in my previous post. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

  • Nice post, I agree with the ongoing approach. I find if you are going to release 10 articles you are better putting them out 1 a week for 10 weeks than all at once

  • I think, from my own experience as well as hearing this from people whose opinion I respect, that if you’re linking to a brand new site you should error on the side of caution, ie. add links slowly. If you are linking to an older well established site you can add links much faster. (some add thousands of links in just a few weeks!) Seo is, of course, not an exact science, and opinions are like*&%$#% everybody’s got one :o )

  • i have tired both paid and free article submission services. when i check my site in seo elite i dont see the links showing up. sure would like to know what to do to get my links noticed my the search engines?

  • It tends to be a numbers game Rita. Just keep writing articles and securing other backlinks to your content (backlinks from comments, forum postings, guest posts, etc.) and in time you should see your traffic increase. There are other things involved as well though, such as: how competitive the keywords you’re targeting are, how well you’ve optimized for said keywords (onsite as well as offsite), and the anchor text used, to name a few. If you would like my help in getting higher ranking in the search engines (for free) just email me and I’ll take a look at your website, and tell you what I would suggest. Be aware though, that ranking for very competitive keywords can take a good deal of time (sometime years) and you may need to produce thousands of backlinks (but the rewards can be worth it!)

  • I don’t usually reply to posts however I’ll on this case. WoW
